Description: Each piece of pit fired pottery is unique within itself. Such is the case with this decorative pot of porcelain clay that was wheel thrown and pit fired creating its one-of-a kind appearance. Pit firing is an ancient method for the firing of pottery. The technique is a simple one. Unfired pots are lowered in a pit surrounded by such things as wood, wood chips, wood shavings, saw dust, leaves, salt, even dried manure. The pit is then set on fire while the burning of these materials traps carbon on the surface of the pots. After cooling, the pots are removed and cleaned leaving patterns of colorful swirls, smudges and splatters left by ash and salt deposits. Pots are then sealed with a satin finish. Please note, pit fired pottery is NOT food safe, the clay is not vitreous so the pot will not hold water. Satisfaction is always 100% guaranteed. Thanks for stopping by and remember to come back often.
