The design is rich with communist symbolism. The obverse of the coin features the State Emblem of the German Democratic Republic, which is a hammer and compass surrounded by a ring of ears with a ribbon and the country name around the rim. The reverse of the coin features the face value of 2 Mark, two oak leaves, the mintmark above the value, and the date at the bottom. The edge is smooth.
