Description: Daring DetectiveNovember 1940 Includes a two page spread with photos about a $25,000 reward offered by New York City for the capture and conviction of those responsible for a deadly bombing the previous July 4th at the World's Fair. Two NYPD detectives were killed and several other people were seriously injured when the bomb exploded. The bomb had been placed inside the British Pavilion at the fair and initial suspicion fell upon members of the pro-Hitler German-American Bund, the Irish Republican Army, and various communist groups. Hundreds of people were interviewed but the investigation stalled out after just one person was arrested but not charged. Because British authorities did not cooperate with the investigation, one theory is that the British placed the bomb themselves in order to garner sympathy in the early days of World War II. The reward, which was increased by $1,000 from NYPD's Detective Endowment Association, would be worth well over $500,000 in today's money. The crime remains open and unsolved.
