Description: Danish MCM Studio Stoneware: Conny Walther, Large Vase with Exceptional Glaze Conny Walther , born in 1931, was a noted Danish mid century ceramicist who early on worked for the famed Copenhagen factories Saxbo and Kahler. She became a leading figure amongst Danish makers working in her own studio in Birkerod, Denmark, alongside her artist husband Bent Stubbe Teglbjerg, from the mid 1960's on. Her signature style often included high-fired embossed, stamped or hand manipulated forms with glossy and dripping glazes. She often used iron rich glazes or ash glazes, sometimes with bold splashes of color or left bits partially unglazed. In her later years she focused exclusively on painting. She became interested in ceramics early on and came to Saxbo at the age of 17. Conny Walther herself describes the meeting with Nathalie Krebs as decisive for her later ceramic work. Conny Walther was only employed by Saxbo for one year and was then directly admitted to the Artisan School, where she attended from 1949 to 1951. After graduating, Conny Walther was employed at Kähler's workshopin Næstved, where she remained until 1952. In 1954, Conny Walter opened her own workshop in Birkerød. At its peak, she had 42 sales points in Jutland and on Funen, and to this came Zealand as well as foreign sales points such as e.g. New York. The ceramics were made from German stoneware clay, which she fired at 1490o C. Wood ash is highlighted for the unique glaze, especially the one with 1⁄2 grain ash and 1⁄2 wood ash, but she has also used straw ash with success. The sales were so large that Conny Walther could not manage the production herself and she therefore had 3-4 students. The students turned vases and bowls according to her instructions, while she herself was responsible for the glaze and firing. This large vase is an exceptional example of Conny Walther's work in her own studio, likely from the late 1950s or 1960s. This robust vase measures nearly 8 inches tall and 5 inches wide and features a horizontal ribbed decoration. The glaze is exceptionally rich, with a glossy blue dripping down over a mustard brown. The vase is well marked with the artist's impressed CW monogram signature and is in exceptional condition. Please consult the photos for more details on both condition and the beautiful glaze treatment.
