Description: On offer, we have "Essay X. On The Construction Of Kitchen Fire-Places And Kitchen Utensils, Together With Remarks And Observations relating to the various Processes Of Cookery; And Proposals for improving that most useful Art.". This is volume III of "Experimental Essays, Political, Economical, and Philosophical" written by Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford. According to my research, this was published in 1799 by A. Strahan For T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, London. It is, possibly, a First Edition. The book consists of Advertisement, Table of contents, Introduction, Chapters and Appendix. It also has 7 pages of engraved plates signed "Lowry Sculp.". These are kitchen fireplace plans for Baron de Lerchenfeld at Munich, Hospital of La Pieta at Verona, House Of Correction at Munich and the Military Hospital at Munich. This approximately 114 page book measures 8 1/4" X 5 1/4" and weighs 7.6 ounces. Research also taught me that Thomas Jefferson admired Sir Benjamin Thompson and built 8 "Rumford Style" fireplaces at Monticello. Without a proper title page (I assume it was in Volume I), I found the publication history on Abebooks. A former owner helped me by writing "By Benjamin Thompson Count Rumford" on the end paper. The marbled paper and leather covers are worn and detached. The very worn leather spine has "Essays" and "3" that are readable. The pages appear to be complete and securely bound. The pages are surprisingly clean. As I am not an expert on rare books, please view my photographs for more description. My friend who collects everything is parting with some of his treasures. I will be happy to answer any questions, send more photos and, of course, combine your shipping.
