Description: DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by the Brooklyn chapter of the Congress For Racial Equity (CORE) for their planned protest at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair. Measures 1 3/4" inches. Rare.BACKGROUND: The announcement of the 1964 NY Worlds Fair cause great anger in the African American communities of New York City. They complained that while black residence lived in poverty, the city government was willing to spend millions on a recreational event like the Worlds Fair. On April 4th, 1964, the Brooklyn chapter of CORE announced their plan to disrupt the opening of the World’s Fair on April 22 unless the city addressed the problems of segregation, job discrimination, police brutality, slum housing, and poor schools—immediately. “While millions of dollars are being spent on the World’s Fair, thousands of Black & Puerto Rican people are suffering,” the statement read. The group threatened to have their members to block public transit and highway across the city in order to make mobility impossible.
