Description: Compendium of ChitonsA Guide to the Recent Polyplacophoraby Giles Granpoder, Bruno Anseeuw, Alain Robin ISBN 9783948603397, published in 2023 by ConchBooks, Harxheim, Germany and AFC-Xenophora, Paris France. Hardcovered book with a page size of 8 by 11.5 inches, 205 by 30 cm., 223 pages which include 177 page sized full color plates of specimen shells and shells in their native habitat, there are also descriptions under the photos with the shell's scientific name, its size, and a general description of where the shell was found. There is a very well written introduction to the Chitons which is written bilingually in English and in French. It has been a number of years since there was a good book in print that covered the shells in the class Polyplacophora, or more commonly called, the Chitons. This new book gives us an up-to-date guide to the identification of these shells for just about any species of these mollusks one is apt to come across. The authors have done a wonderful job of assembling photos of 840 species of the probable 1068 known species. The shells that are missing are mainly deep-water dwelling species that are small in size and seldom seen. The authors have wisely used the WoRMS (World Registry of Marine Species) data base for the systematics and taxonomy of the shells. The introduction to the book is well done and gives us a look at the structure, anatomy, and the girdle of the mollusks that I have not seen so well detailed elsewhere.
