Description: Vintage carte de visite of Civil War Colonel Samuel W. Black, commander of the 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Black (1816-1862), an attorney, was a veteran of he U.S.-Mexican War and a former governor of Nebraska Territory. He was killed leading his regiment in a charge during the Battle of Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. I've posted a contemporary obituary that chronicles his impressive career. Lincoln, Nebraska, photographer Henry Edward Noble was operating at the Post Office Square address in 1880, so he must have reproduced an earlier image of Black. From evidence on the card reverse, this CDV was likely in an album at one time, or some kind of display. The photograph itself is an albumen print, which one would expect for this time period. Looks great! SEE PHOTOS. Image is in very good condition. Bottom of CDV has been trimmed, likely to fit in an album or display. SEE PHOTOS.
