Description: An original Civil War US War Department General Order, issued May 15, 1863 at Washington, DC, charging Norfolk resident Alexander Spence of robbing and setting fire to the store of Joshua H King and several other buildings in Norfolk, on the corner of East Main & Market Street, and a Military Commission finding him guilty, sentences him to execution "to be hung by the neck until dead, the sentence being approved by the President of the United States and General John Dix ordered to carry it out. With red ink notation "Rec'd July 29, 1863" 2pp ptd 8 x 5". Edge stains, Overall VG. 800x600 General & Special Orders were issued to communicate commands and information to the Army. Each order, issued in writing by a command, was then printed for distribution to each unit, either at an army department headquarter or by commanders at local headquarters, sometimes in the field on portable printing presses. The orders were then issued to regiments, often to be read aloud to the troops. General Orders were printed as issued with date & location; at the end of a year the regimental adjutant might retain them loose or simply string bind them by punching holes and stringing on ¼” red cloth string tape (the source of the old expression "government red tape").
