Born on September 12, 1917 in Ichinokura Village, Toki-gun (now Tajimi City), Gifu Prefecture, as the eldest son of Kouhei Kato V.1935 Graduated from Tajimi Technical School (now Tajimi Technical High School) in Gifu Prefecture, and entered the Ceramics Department of the National Ceramics Testing Laboratory in Kyoto.1938 Enlisted in the army. 1945 Drafted into the army and exposed to the atomic bomb in Hiroshima,Developed leukemia and spent about 10 years fighting the disease.1956 (Showa 31) Exhibited “Vase with Green Colors on Black Ground” at Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) and was selected for the first time at the age of 391961 (Showa 36) Studied at the Finnish School of Arts and Crafts. Since then, he visited kiln sites in Iran and devoted himself to the study of Persian ceramics.1964 (Showa 39) The Mino Ceramic Association was established and he became the first president.1973 Studied in Iran for two months to research Persian ceramics, and participated in excavations at the National Museum of Iran.1975 Awarded the Chunichi Bunka Prize for his research on lusterware and his teaching and training of Mino ceramics.1980 (Showa 55) Commissioned by the Shosoin Repository of the Imperial Household Agency to restore the Shosoin Sansai (Nara Sansai).1983 (Showa 58) Designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture for luster glaze, blue glaze, and sansai.1988 (Showa 63) Received the Medal with Purple Ribbon and delivered a restored Sansai drum body (porcelain drum) to the Shosoin Repository.1995 (Heisei 7) On May 31, he was designated as the holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property “Sansai” (Living National Treasure).2005 (Heisei 17) January 11, died at the age of 87.
