CHARLIE MINGUS - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/12/1973 - HFSID 280772 CHARLES MINGUS Jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus signed this typed letter to CBS Records in 1973 to let them know who his attorney was. Typed letter signed "Charles Mingus" in blue ink. Red ink date stamp on verso. 1 page, 8½x10¾, photocopy with two file holes at top edge. Oct. 12, 1973, date stamped Oct. 15, 1973 on verso. Addressed to CBS Records, New York City. In full: "Gentlemen: I have retained the firm of Phillip S. Kurnit, P. C. as my attorney and herewith request that you forward to them any docu-ments which they may request." Mingus released the album Mingus Moves in 1973. Mingus (1922-1979), who was also known as Charlie Mingus, was known worldwide as a jazz bassist, composer and bandleader as well as an occasional pianist. Mingus, who toured with Louis Armstrong in 1943 and played with Lionel Hampton's band in the late 1940s, was also briefly a member of Duke Ellington's band and played live dates with Charlie Parker before he gained recognition as a bandleader in his own right. Over the years, Mingus recruited dozens of talented and little-known artists, many of whom went on to successful careers of their own. On the tour referenced in this Rider, Mingus brought together drummer Dannie Richmond (who had been with Mingus since 1964), pianist Don Pullen, saxophonist George Adams and saxophonist and clarinetist Hamiet Bluiett (Richmond, Pullen and Adams were among the group that recorded Changes One and Changes Two, two of Mingus' well-received albums). Mingus, who recorded a number of albums as a bandleader, co-founded Debut Records with Max Roach in 1952 to maintain control over his recording career. Known for his fearsome temperament (his nickname was "The Angry Man of Jazz") and his activism against racism, Mingus' compositions include Epitaph, one of the longest jazz pieces ever written (over 4,000 measures). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Show-through from date stamp (does not touch signature). Photocopy marks. Folded twice and unfolded. Staple holes and paper clip impression in top left corner. Otherwise in fine condition. See more material from these signers: CHARLIE MINGUS See more listings in our MUSIC & PERFORMERS (2,967) category. Please note that this is an authentically signed item.
