Program of the 47th Annual Portland Rose Festival, June 8-12, 1955. New York-born Irish tenor DENNIS DAY (1916-1988) hosted his own radio show from 1946-1954. For 25 years, he was closely linked with Jack Benny in films, radio and television, famous for his trademark phrase "Gee, Mr. Benny." Day also sang for animated films, including Johnny Appleseed (1948), and appeared in a number of feature films, including Buck Benny Rides Again (1940, his debut), Music in Manhattan (1944), I'll Get By (1950) and Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976). Amos n' Andy, originally titled Sam n' Henry, debuted on Chicago's WGN on January 12, 1926. The storyline was about two Alabama Black men who came to Chicago to find their fortunes. Its two stars, Freeman and CHARLES CORRELL (1890-1972), both white, wrote the scripts and played all of the parts. Amos n' Andy premiered on the NBC radio network on Thursday night, August 19, 1929 at 11:00 P.M. EST. The show was broadcast an unprecedented six days a week. Amos n' Andy hit its peak of popularity in the 1930s, but remained on radio until 1958. A television version of the show ran on CBS from 1951 to 1953, and in reruns from 1954 to 1966. Almost from its inception, the show drew protests from some in the Black community who considered it demeaning. However, film historian Elizabeth McLeod, who studied thousands of pages of scripts, argues that it portrayed African Americans in a much more positive way that did most of the US entertainment industry of that era. THE SPORTSMEN were a popular vocal quartet of the 1940s and fifties, closely associated with Jack Benny. They were regulars on his radio program from 1946, and appeared in 14 of his TV episodes. They also performed with Eddie Cantor, and with Phil Harris and Alice Faye. The group included BILL DAYS (top tenor), BOB GARSEN (2nd tenor), MARTY SPERZEL (baritone) and GURNEY BELL (bass). MILTON W. RICE, Vice President of the National Bank of Portland, was President of the Festival in 1955. The Portland Festival of Roses, founded in 1907, is still going strong in 2012. Corners lightly worn. Multiple signature lightly beaded but legible. Vertical fold crease through center. Otherwise, fine condition. See more material from these signers: CHARLES CORRELL MILTON W.
