Charles A. Reynolds Original Psychedelic Abstract Painting

Description: This artwork is an original gouache by the artist Charles A. Reynolds who is an African-American artist from North Philadelphia and then Washington, D.C. Reynolds was born in 1927 and attended the Philadelphia Museum College of Art in the late 1940's. After graduating from college he did free lance work including illustrations for the Philadelphia Inquirrer before joining the U.S. army. In the 1950's he relocated to Washington, D.C. where he served as an illustrator for the Heraldic Services Division of the US Army. He remained an army illustrator into the 1980's and he attained the title "Chief - Design and Illustration of the Army Institute of Heraldry at Cameron Station in Alexandria Virginia. In addition to his Army illustrations, he produced illustrations of various African tribal groups, psychedelic art, conventional illustrations, erotic illustrations for men's magazines and art illustrating the social issues of the 60's. The date of his death is not known but this artwork came from his estate. The artwork for sale is a psychedelic abstract with strong erotic overtones. The piece is gouache on a thin sheet of illustration board. The artwork measures 2o" high by 15" across. It likely dates from the early to mid 1960's. The piece is signed with the artist's initials "CR" at the lower right (photo 4) but the signature is light and difficult to read. Primary colors are a variety of shades of blue, dark red, yellow, brown and black. Like the Rorschach test, a female figure in an erotic pose is discernable but oh so subtly. There is about a one inch tear into the image on the lower left (photo 5). This painting reminds the seller of works by the Indian Space Painters like Peter Busa and Steve Wheeler or of images by Chicago imagist Karl Wirsum. Like a "black light" print from the 60's, the colors in this painting will pop right off the wall...
