Description: Plain Jane 1 CARGO BOOK – SS WINFIELD SCOTT DESCRIPTIONCargo book 10 x 6 ¼.Green paper boards. Paste on label imprinted CARGO BOOK, Per ship (in manuscript) Winfield Scott/Captain(Printed)/To Port Phillip( manuscript)/ Commencing (printed). Below “Cuthberry & Southey Printers & Stationers….London” Unfortunately the internal page are unfilled, and appears as if the first free flyleaf/ or title page is missing. (There is a pencil notation from the previous owner mentioning in 1851 the ship went to Port Phillip Australia with emigrants, though I cannot verify this on this information. Perhaps the previous owner had material to state this). Based upon the previous owner’s notes, I believed this to be the famed SS Winfield Scott of the Pacific Mail Steamship that crashed into Middle Anacapa Island in 1853. However , I received an email stating that there was a vessel Winfield Scott that wrecked off of North Carolina in 1861. I am not doubting the information, however have been unable to verify this, nor is a Winfield Scott listed in the book Shipwrecks of the Civil War, An Encyclopedia of Union and Confederate Naval Losses by Donald Shomette. The SS Winfield Scott that I believe this to be was a sidewheel steamer that transported passengers and cargo between San Francisco, California and Panama in the early 1850s, during the California Gold Rush. After entering a heavy fog off the coast of Southern California on the evening of December 1, 1853, the ship crashed into Middle Anacapa Island. All 450 passengers and crew survived, but the ship was lost.Winfield Scott has been the object of numerous salvage operations since the crash, and currently rests underwater as part of the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. The Winfield Scott wreck site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Please refer to photographs Domestic post will be $4.75 Thank you for your interest in the item.
