Description: Roman Imperial Provincial silver tetradrachm of Caracalla, 198-217 A.D., Syria. Sear 2650. The obverse shows the laureate head of Caracalla to the right. The obverse legend equivalent, I believe, shows "R AVTKAI ANTWNEINOS SE". The reverse shows a front facing eagle with wings spread, and a wreath in its beak. The reverse legend equivalent I believe is "DI MARC EX UPATOS TO D". The surfaces are mostly dark gray and show some fine porous texture as though it may have had heavy toning at some time that was removed. The portrait style is not as finely rendered as some specimens. The diameter is approx. 24-25 mm. I find pieces with the weight ranging from 11.3 gm to 14.9 gm. This piece weighs 11.5 gms. This is a genuine original coin, not a copy, replica, or reproduction.
