Description: Description: The item up for bids is a fine and rare antique circa early 1900s hand-colored photograph by J.H. Jost. According to a 1919 advertisement found in Photo-Era, The American Journal of Photography, Jost billed himself as "a practical expert photographer and colorist" who sold "beautifully colored photographic enlargements in oil and watercolor." From what I've been able to find he was active in Nova Scotia, Canada, and New England in the latter part of the 19th century and into the early 20th century. The image at hand is titled Cape Cod Windmill, Chatham, and is hand signed in pencil. The image is well composed and the coloration has aged into a lovely muted tonalist palette. The photograph is mounted to a mat board and has what appears to be its original gold painted wood frame. Because it's behind glass it is difficult to photograph without reflections. Photo 10 is taken outdoors in the sunshine, the other photos are taken indoors under lights. It is a great Cape Cod image, have some fun and bid! The Chatham Windmill is located southwest of downtown Chatham, in the southern section of Chase Park, between Shattuck and Gristmill Lanes. It is a wood-frame structure, set on a rise overlooking the Mill Pond on Chatham's south shore. It is about three stories in height, with an octagonal shape that tapers to a gabled cap, and is covered in wooden shingles. The cap's side faces are slightly bowed. The wind vanes are attached to one of the gabled ends of the cap. Entrances are located at the northern and southern sides of the structures, and there are small windows on the second level. The mill was built in 1797 by Benjamin Godfrey, and was used to grind corn. It was originally located on Stage Harbor Road, and was moved to its present location in 1955, the year it was given to the town. The methods used in its construction suggest that the builder was from the southeast of England. The mill remained in commercial use until 1907, when it was significantly damaged in a storm. Although it was repaired, it was again damaged by severe weather in 1929. The mill has undergone several phases of rehabilitation, during which worn and rotted parts have been replaced. The mill is operated seasonally as a museum, and the town employs a miller to occasionally use it to grind grain. Source: Wikipedia Condition: The overall condition is good antique. The photograph has not been examined out of the frame. The colors have mellowed with age. It is slightly wavy. The mat board has scattered foxing dots and specks. Photos 7 and 8 show the foxing, it is fairly uniform across the mat's surface (not on the photo itself). The frame is in fair shape. It is structurally solid and functional. The gold finish has edge wear and minor chipping at the corners, and there is a large chip on the bottom back edge (photo 11). There are some staining and tears in the paper backing and a few missing bits. The hanging wire and eye hooks are secure. Overall it presents well and is ready to hang. The pictures are the best indicator as to condition, please use the zoom feature and check them out. Dimensions: The photograph is about 6-5/8" wide by 4-1/2" tall. The frame is about 10-5/8" wide by 8-5/8" tall. (Note: measurements are approximate) Shipping: The buyer of this fine item will be responsible for shipping costs which will be added to the final bid.
