Description: Available are Six circa 1899-1905 Antique Flow Blue Plates by Wedgwood, Etruria England, for "Sole Importers" JONES, McDUFFEE & STRATTON Co., Boston. Ironstone Transferware Flow Blue Series of Plates of historic Boston. Each plate features wide rims with full rose blooms and foliage and all are 9-1/4" Width. The condition of all of the plates is excellent for their age, with the exception of the Boston Town House plate which has a crack described below. All plates show some signs of crazing and edge browning on the white back of the rims; both of these characteristics are common to 19th century Ironstone. Maker's Marks (for both Wedgwood and Jones, McDuffee & Stratton) and a description of the scene depicted is printed on back in blue (see photos). In addition, all of the plates have the 'WEDGWOOD' impressed stamp and the Wedgwood manufacturer's date code stamped (as described below). Note that many of these plates and patterns have been re-issued in contemporary times, some for Shreve Crump & Low Company, but the ones available for sale here are the originals from over a century ago. Available are the following six plates from this collection: Wedgwood Dating: In 1860 the Wedgwood factory started marking its wares with the date of manufacture impressed in each piece as part of a three letter code. The first letter of the code represents the month of manufacture, the second identified the potter who threw the shape and the last letter signifying the year the piece was made starting with "O" for 1860. The series was repeated 4 times. From 1907 on in the third series the first letter for the month is replaced by a 3 and with the fourth series commencing with A in 1924 with the figure 4. There is an area of possible confusion in wares in the first two series. For example TOT could mean a piece produced in either June 1865 or June of 1891. Commencing in 1929 the year mark is replaced by the last two digits of the year, 30 standing for 1930. In the case of "K" meaning 1882, the letter K would have only been used once after 1860 without "ENGLAND" appearing on the piece which began in 1891. Some assistance in resolving the ambiguity in the two series is provided by the month letter. January, February, April, September, October, November and December are always show by their intial letter. June is always T and August is always W. In 1860-1863 March is M, May is Y and July is V. In 1864 March becomes R, May is M and July is L. In 1871 Wedgwood adopted pattern numbers with the code letter prefixes. I'd be happy to sell these all as a single lot and am offering a nice discount for multiple purchases. Naturally, shipping will be combined for items as well. 1) Queen Dragon Tavern, Union Street Boston, Copyright 1899; mfg'd October 1899, code "OZB" 2) The Boston Tea Party, Copyright 1899; mfg'd October 1899, code "OZB" 3) Boston in 1768, no Copyright Date printed; mfg'd October 1899, code "OZB" 4) Boston Common and State House,1836, Copyright 1899; mfg'd October 1899, code "OZB" 5) Faneuil Hall "Cradle of Liberty" Built 1742, Copyright 1899; mfg'd October 1899, code "OZB" 6) Boston Town House, Copyright 1896; mfg'd 1898, code "CLA" This plate has a 1/2" chip and crack, most notable on the back side of the rim.
