Description: Presented is a wonderful early American coin silver 4 piece tea set, by Joel and John Sayre, dating to circa 1800. The set is made in a handsome, classical form with vertical fluted paneled bodies and stylized urn form finials on the lids. The teapot has a carved wood C-scroll handle and a very well executed invisible hinge to the lid. Each piece has a monogram of M in script. The set consists of: Teapot-- 13 1/4 inches from spout to handle, 7 3/4 inches tall. Capacity of 7 cups (56 fluid ounces/1.7 liters). Creamer-- 5 1/2 inches from spout to handle, 5 inches tall. Sugar bowl-- 8 1/2 inches from handle to handle, 6 7/8 inches tall. Waste bowl-- 6 1/4 inches in diameter, 5 1/8 inches tall. This set is in great overall condition, particularly for its age. The teapot has had a repair to its wooden handle, where it has been glued and also pinned with wood pins, near the top/thumbpiece of the handle. There is also a chip/gouge that was filled in near the base of the handle. The handle is still quite sturdy and strong, but this repair could likely be done more professionally to make it less noticeable. The teapot itself has a couple of tiny dings which are quite minor. The creamer has an old solder repair to the underside, and probably another solder repair beneath where the top of the handle joins the body, as well as a few small dings here and there. The waste bowl has a couple of dents to one 'rib.' The sugar bowl has a little bit of a bend to the finial of the lid, and a couple of minor dings here and there. No solder repairs besides the two noted, no leaks, and no monogram removals. The teapot and sugar bowl are stamped on the underside with the maker's mark for John Sayre, an American silversmith working c1796-1818 in New York. The creamer and waste bowl have the mark of Joel Sayre, who worked alongside his brother John circa 1798-1811. The J. Sayre mark is generally attributed to Joel, while the I. Sayre (remembering that J is often stamped I at the time period) is generally attributed to John, but the presence of both certainly suggests the set was made in the time period both brothers worked at the same location. All the pieces are coin purity silver (900) tested and guaranteed. The total weight for the set is 1639 grams or 57.8 regular ounces. -jm Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
