Description: c1700, ANTIQUE 17thC / 18thC GERMAN SOLID SILVER EGG FORM POMANDER VINAIGRETTE Description A scarce antique solid silver pomander or vinaigrette of egg form, unmarked, German or possibly Dutch in origin, dating to the late 17th/ early 18th Century, circa 1700. The silver egg unscrews into three sections to reveal an internal compartment to house a scented wax ball, and a smaller gold gilt lined compartment within the tip for spices. The outer surface is hand chased and engraved with Baroque castellated designs seen in the late 17th Century. A rope twist jump ring is attached to the end to allow this to be worn as a pendant or attached to a chatelaine. A historical restoration can be seen to the inside of the main compartment which has been very well finished to the outer surface, therefore largely invisible.
