Paper size : 19 5/8 x 23 inches’ - Image Size: 15.25 x 19.75 inches This very attractive early 17th century map depicts the historic Burgundy Region, home to many fine wines in eastern France, centered roughly on the Saone River. It extends from Crevant to Montbeliard in the north and from Varennes-sur-Allier to Geneva at bottom. Topographical features are shown and most towns, cities, forests, and waterways are identified including Citeaux (site of the famous Cistercian abbey), Dijon (famous for its mustards), and Beaune (center for trading in Burgundy wines). The beautiful and elaborate title cartouche is flanked by Mars and one of his consorts and with coat-of-arms further enhancing the map. Blaeu was the founder of the leading 17th century Dutch cartographic firm. “The achievements of the firms of Blaeu were remarkable, & the palm for supremacy in map production in any age must be awarded to the Blaeu” (Tooley: Maps & Map-Makers, p. 33). This is an original, about 380 years old, not a reproduction, and its condition is shown in the photos. It has some even toning. Center fold as issued. Verso (back) is blank. It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. We have been full-time dealers in Illuminated Manuscripts, Maps, Prints and Antiquities since 1980.
