Description: Burgess & Leigh Farmers Arms Two-Handled Cider Mugc1870 Early Farmers Arms two-handled hot cider mug by Burgess and Leigh, Burslem Staffordshire, England. The two handles serve for passing the mug from one person to another around the cider cellar. The pattern features an agricultural motif with tools of the period, such as a single bottom plow, scythe, rake, rifle, and more. Beside the tools is either a farmer planting, or a woman churning butter. At the bottom is 'God Speed the Plow' on a ribbon banner. The handles have a leaf or wheat design that extends to the interior rim of the cup. The other side of the mug has the following verse: Let the Wealthy and Great Roll in Splendour and State I envy them not, I declare it I eat my own lamb My chickens and ham I shear my own fleece and I wear it I have lawns, I have bowers I have fruits, I have flowers The lark is my morning alarmer So jolly boys nowHere's God speed the plough Long life and success to the Farmer. Measures:3 1/4" diameter; 3" high Marked on the base in black, Farmers Arms, B&L Very good antique condition with strong colors and high glaze. There is overall crazing consistent with age and residue from an old label. There is an underglaze sliver chip to the base that occurred in the making, and a small area of discoloration to the interior and to the handle. There are also expected manufacturing imperfections typical of this type of pottery.
