The scratch removal part of polishing will require treated nylon or plain felt wheels and either dry or regular bobbing compound. Using a Dremel tool or variable speed drill, place the wheel in the drill chuck. With the wheel rotating, lightly press it against the bobbing cake to charge the wheel. This only takes a couple of seconds. Remember that the charge will wear off when polishing quickly and you will have to repeat this step several times while removing the scratches. CAUTION: A spinning buffing wheel is very dangerous. You must hold onto the item being buffed and focus totally on that process. The item is going to get hot from the friction created by the turning wheel. The fibers of the wheel can grab onto any outstanding design feature and send the item flying. Start with a very slow turning wheel in order to gain confidence and experience with this process. Never start on an expensive piece because there is a learning curve to this type of work.The bobbing compound should be used with treated nylon or felt wheels. These remove scratches faster than untreated nylon.Once the scratches have been removed, wash the item with a diluted solution of ammonia and water and a soft tooth brush. Rinse the item and then dry it. Watch any chemicals around soft stones like emerald, turquoise, malachite and pearls. In that case, substitute dawn dish soap as the cleaning agent. Change the polishing wheel to untreated nylon, muslin, or leather as these work best with red rouge compound or one step compound. One Step has smaller grains within the formula for a high polish but not much in the way of scratch removal.Repeat the charge and polish procedure with either red rouge compound or one step compound ending with cleaning and drying the item. Never hold the buffing wheel in one spot for too long, you are removing material during each of these steps.We offer all of the polishing materials mentioned above.Thank you.
