A useful compendium.BROADWAY'S BEST 1957BY JOHN CHAPMAN ‧ RELEASE DATE: DEC. 27, 1957The drama critic for the N.Y. News has assembled here a critical and statistical record of the theatrical year 1956-57 (from June 1 to May 31). The choice of Broadway's Best, twelve in number, including one musical, is Mr. Chapman's own. Where a play has received mixed notices he includes the dissenting comments of the other N.Y. critics. Among the Best plays, in Mr. Chapman's view are: Long Day's Journey Into Night. The Potting Shed, Orpheus Descending, A Visit to a Small Planet, Small War on Murray Hill and Candide. The twelve plays, summarized, are preceded by a critical introduction, touching on the backgrounds of the plays and their authors. A brief summary of the entire season's offerings, including casts of characters, is presented along with lists of prize plays, longest runs, holdover from previous seasons and a bibliography of books about the theatre published this year. This book has too wide a scope for those looking particularly for critical essays on the current state of the theatre. But as a reference work it is impressive.
