Description: Broadway History: LEE SHUBERT 1944 Letter w/envelope on Letterhead Typed letter from Lee Shubert to Mrs. John B. Howe, with ink signature. Dated July 28, 1944. Unfortunately, the initials under Shubert's signature suggest that it was signed for him by a secretary. Still, the letter is on the stationery of Shubert's Select Theatres Corp, and comes with the original envelope. Shubert writes: "Dear Mrs. Howe: I will be glad to see you any time you wish to drop in, any afternoon, providing I am in town." The letter measures about 8.5" x 7". Condition is nice, as shown. The creases from the original folding are evident. The envelope is somewhat soiled as shown. Lee Shubert (1871 – 1953) was a Lithuanian-born American theatre owner/operator and producer and the eldest of seven siblings of the theatrical Shubert family. With borrowed money, he and younger brothers Sam and Jacob embarked on a business venture that led to their becoming the successful operators of several theaters in upstate New York. The Shubert brothers decided to expand to the huge market in New York City, and at the end of March 1900 they leased the Herald Square Theatre at the corner of Broadway and 35th Street in Manhattan. Leaving younger brother Jacob at home to manage their existing theatres, Lee and Sam Shubert moved to New York City, where they laid the foundations for what was to become the largest theatre empire in the 20th century, including the Winter Garden and Shubert Theatres. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
