Association copy with manuscript note by Edward Hawke Locker signed “EHL” in margins of pp. 308-309 in the section AEROSTATION.---ASCENTS OF MONSIOUR GARNERIN IN 1802 of vol 4. The text details balloon ascents & mentions that on Garnerin’s second balloon ascent “…he was accompanied by Edward Hawke Locker, jun. of Greenwich Hospital…” (p. 306). Locker has marked the text with an brown ink asterisk in the manner of a footnote where Garnerin’s published account of his parachute descent of July 5, 1802 is quoted: “‘…with a conscience void of reproach’ he severed the cord that suspended him between earth & heaven”. Locker’s ms. note says “Rather I fear a ‘conscience scared’ and remarks that “Soon after my voyage with Garnerin a person named Neville exposed him in the newspaper as having been one of Robes-pierre’s Colume while employed in the massacre of the aristocrats in the prisons of Paris…EHL”. A remarkable association with unique comment connecting the Reign of Terror and an historic account of the balloon flight & parachute descent of July 5, 1802. Three-quarter London tan oasis niger morocco & marbled boards, backs in five compartments gilt lettered in the second & third gilt center ornaments in the rest, gilt date at foot, four raised bands.
