Hundreds of nuclear tests were conducted until 1989. The Anti-nuclear movement in Kazakhstan became a major political force in the late 1980s. Officially, Kazakhstan is a democratic, secular, constitutional unitary republic; Nursultan Nazarbayev led the country from 1991 to 2019. He was succeeded by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The president may veto legislation that has been passed by the parliament and is also the commander in chief of the armed forces.
