Description: Bom Dia! Level 2 covers the second year of Portuguese for middle and high school students and follows the National Standards developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). These are Communication, Connections, Cultures, Comparisons and Community, concepts that are incorporated into every unit. Tools such as pronunciation guides and review materials are useful as always; and interdisciplinary links and technology bring language learning into the 21st century. Bom Dia! Level 2 contains short biographies, essays on culture, and over 1,000 photographs to tell the story of the eight nations comprising the Lusophone world. Each unit is defined by new vocabulary and a featured culture representing a new and different region. Unidade Preliminar is a review of Bom Dia! Level 1 and continues the cultural exploration of Portugal through readings, vignettes, photographs and history of the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. Subsequent chapters take us to Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor—a journey across the Lusophone world that reveals the wealth and spirit of foreign lands just as Portugal’s great explorers did 600 years ago. Throughout the text, pair and group activities challenge students to make language learning an important communicative experience. The rich cultural component of the text also allows students to build upon knowledge acquired in other subject areas. In these pages, students will meet notable painters, musicians, writers, poets, presidents, military leaders, and Nobel laureates. They will explore nature, architecture, colonialism, civil war, religious feasts, and ancient customs. Students will be introduced, many for the first time, to important emerging African nations like Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Angola. They will uncover the tremendous beauty and diversity of Brazil, and learn about the world’s newest nation, East Timor, with its long and painful struggle for independence and its rich cultural traditions such as tais weaving and likurai dance. Bom Dia! Level 2 recognizes that students cannot truly master a language until they have also mastered its cultural context, which means gaining a deep understanding of the cultures that speak Portuguese. Furthermore, students will develop insight into the nature of language and the concept of culture by comparing the history and development of the Portuguese language with their knowledge of English, and so realize there are multiple ways of viewing the world.
