Description: A ca 1930s Italian cigarette case engraved front and back with a scene of Trieste Castello di Miramare on the top and Cabanel Nascita di Venere (Birth of Venus) on the flip side. The nude Venus is based on the painting by Alexandre Cabanel but does not have the putti or cherubs flying overhead, which makes the piece have more of an erotic look. The Italian castle scene has a beautiful foliate border. The hinged lid works well, the case opens and closes with a snap and edges are tight. Inside there is a spring-loaded bar to hold cigarettes/cards/ money in place. It works only for short unfiltered cigarettes. There are no hallmarks but it tests as silver, probably 800 purity which was the standard in Italy at that time. The case measures 5 1/2" x 3 1/4" x 5/16" and weighs 149.8 grams. It is in fine condition, no dents, heavy scratches, or damage.
