This rare and unique volume comes with a dust jacket, and is an abridged collection of the most pivotal and emotionally and contextually meaningful scenes from across each of the 10 volumes that comprise the series. ** Please note that this book was published in Japan, intended for Japanese readers learning English. For that reason, it had been modified to read left to right, and includes context footnotes. ** Project Gen has a historic connection to Barefoot Gen, as they were not only the first Japanese-to-English translators of the series back in 1977, but also were among the first to bring Japanese manga to a North American audience. Project Gen reestablished in 2009 to once again do a modern retranslation of the entire series for Western readers; and this time, opted to keep the books reading from right to left. This book however, as mentioned above, was produced in Japan in 2013, and was specifically intended for a Japanese market, designed for readers who were learning English. As such, it reads left to right, and each page includes footnotes with explanation and context information for the Western words and idioms used. The book also includes a Forward, describing the series's history and the publishing of this particular abridged volume, as well as a character introduction page. There is also an Afterward, giving a personal bio for the author Nakazawa Keiji, more context regarding Project Gen's history with the series, and the partnership with the publisher Last Gasp, to bring the series to an even wider audience. These additions are all written in Japanese. The book is in overall beautiful brand new condition, as it has never been read. The spine is completely tight and the book sits flat. The dust jacket is also in quite beautiful condition, with only some limited shelf wear to the front cover - specifically some edge wear and light surface markings that can generally only be seen in specific angles or light. All interior pages are intact, sit flat, and have no tears, creases, notation or handwriting, and there is no discoloration.
