Description: Greek settlers had occupied Bactria since around 500 BC. Greek influence increased around 494 BC when the Persians captured Didyma and forced the Greek to settle in Bactria. Later other Greeks, mostly prisoners of war, settled there also. Alexander the Great conquered Bactria in 328 BC. When Alexander conquered an area he often left an occupying force of his wounded. The coins of Bactria were remarkable in their bi-Lingual inscriptions. The obverse has an Elephant head to the right with its trunk and tusks; a bell hanging from the neck. The wording reads “Very great king Menander.” The reverse depicts Hercules' club placed vertically. Once again the words read “Very great king Menander.” Size Varies About 1.3cm, .5 in, 2.50g Menander, r. 165/155-130 BC, was the greatest monarch of Bactria.
