Description: Babes in the Darkling Woods by H. G. Wells with Introduction by Wells: "The Novel of Ideas" New York: Alliance Book Corporation, 1940 First American Edition, First Printing (with no additional printings listed) Hardcover. Tan buckram with brown titles to front & spine; red top stain. xvi + 410 pp. 6-1/4" x 9-1/2". Good in fair, unclipped ($2.75) dust jacket. Ex-lending library copy with library stamp (dated "Sep 17 1940") to front pastedown, brown tape-marks on covers & end-papers, old black tape along edges of dust jacket with black residue on edges of boards & to pastedowns & end papers. Previous owner's name & erasure marks to front end paper. Scattered soiling & mild, even toning to pages, but otherwise, interior is clean & unmarked. Binding has a little give, but remains solid; spine square. Covers have old tape marks & black soiling to edges; light wear at corners & along edges; mild, general soiling to boards. Dust jacket has remnants of black tape along top & bottom edges, with a 1/4-inch strip missing along top edges; chipping at spine ends, to bottom rear corners & along bottom edge; old tape repairs & tape remnants to rear panel, across bottom rear edge of spine, & to inverse side; tape markings to front flap; wear along flap folds, with a few tears & a small hole to rear edge; a narrow strip missing along side of rear flap. DJ comes protected by new, archival cover (see final 2 photos). This copy was part of the circulating library offered by The Paris Company, a department store on Broadway in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. Showing the wear & tear of usage & age, but still a solid copy of this "novel of ideas" through which Wells addresses issues such as atheism, marriage, Russia under Stalin, predictions on the world after the war, the need for a World State, and the efficacy of fledgling psychotherapeutic techniques.
