Description: Austria-Hungary: Franz Joseph Medal for Bravery, 3rd Class, with bar: Kaukasus, 1915-1917. Small bronze bravery medal instituted on February 14, 1915, during the reign of Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph (see von Falkenstien, Joseph; Imperial Austrian Medals and Decorations (1972) pp. 90-91). This particular medal is a rare unofficial, anonymous, privately-struck example, with the unofficial bar “Kaukasus,” for service against the Russians in the Caucasus Mountains. The medal is on the original correct, but privately-made ribbon, which is a much finer weave that the officially produced ribbon, and intended to be worn on a straight, rather than trifold ribbon. Since this medal would never have been permitted to be worn on the uniform, it was most likely sold to veterans after the war. The medal and bar are in extremely fine condition. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold. Item will be shipped USPS First Class Mail; will combine postage for multiple purchases.
