Description: Aurora-Elgin Area- Street Cars & Interurbans – The Connecting Lines Volume 4 covers the various independent interurbans that operated from Aurora and Elgin. They radiated to Joliet, Morris, DeKalb, Sycamore, Marengo and Belvidere, Illinois. The interurbans were all independent. But all were dependent upon the Aurora Elgin & Chicago for their existence and the traffic the A.E.&C. generated. The three lines that ran into Aurora or Elgin also ran over the tracks of and purchased their electricity from the A.E.& C. Each of the six companies were constructed during the interurban building boom around the first part of the twentieth century. None of these companies lasted even 25 years. Except for the ill-fated Woodstock & Sycamore whose demise in the early 1920s. You can find a book on this website about the Woodstock & Sycamore. This was due to huge bond issues for road building in Illinois. These hard roads make automobile travel more dependable. With the loss of business, the already weakened interurbans all ceased passenger operations by 1924, except for the Elgin & Belvidere which hung on until 1930. The owner, Bion J. Arnold, used most of his fortune trying to keep that road alive during this period. The book will take the reader back in time when a unique method of transportation linked rural American towns not only with each other, but with big cities twenty, thirty, even a hundred miles away. The author recalls the heyday of the trolley in his youth and traces its evolution while it lasted in the Fox River Valley area. These trolley lines are now mostly forgotten, and their road beds have largely gone back to nature. You will want to add Aurora-Elgin Area- Street Cars & Interurbans – The Connecting Lines Volume 4 to your collection. Volume 2, The Aurora, Elgin & Fox River Electric Company 1923-1935. Aurora Street scenes, Pre- 1900 Street cars in Aurora and Elgin is also available on this website.
