These massive 98-foot double-engine diesels were UP’s mainstay hotshot power for a decade until they were sidelined by the recession of the early 1980’s. They had one last hurrah in 1984-85 when 25 of them were returned to service for about a year to help relieve a power shortage. ROAD NUMBER SPECIFIC FEATURES: #6900 The only DDA40X to be built without class lights on the long hood. It was delivered in time for the Golden Spike Centennial Celebration thus earning the series the moniker ‘Centennial’. This model represents the ‘as-delivered’ appearance. Currently preserved and prominently displayed in Omaha NE alongside Big Boy #4023.#6901 Unique chicken-wire-esque radiator grilles on the long hood for both prime movers, the only DDA40X equipped like this. #6905 (previously released by Athearn) had one set of these grills and were mismatched with the traditional grill. #6901 is Primed for Grime to match its last years in service appearance.
