It doesn't look like it has to work, it just has to be there and hooked up. For the original ST with no internal drive it'll show up as A and will be bootable. You can't boot from it unless you've modded the computer so you have to boot into GEM and then try to load the program from there. It's not a limitation on the adapter, it's just the ST. If by some miracle your internal drive still works you can copy games from a Gotek to disks with a copy utility if you're that way inclined.
