Description: ARTIST SIGNED: W. A. Weber - Yellow Billed Cuckoo - National Wildlife ©1942: Walter Alois Weber (May 23, 1906 - January 10, 1979) was an American mammologist, animal artist, and illustrator for National Geographic. He was noted for his colorful and realistic-looking sketches and paintings of animals, particularly wild cats, Alaska Peninsula brown bears, American black bears, coyotes, and dog breeds, including retrievers, hounds, and sporting dogs. He also painted portraits of many other birds, mammals, and reptiles. His work in the National Geographic caught the public's attention from 1939 to 1968. In 1967, he was given the Conservation Service Award. Yellow-billed Cuckoos are slender, long-tailed birds that manage to stay well hidden in deciduous woodlands. They usually sit stock still, even hunching their shoulders to conceal their crisp white underparts, as they hunt for large caterpillars. Bold white spots on the tail’s underside are often the most visible feature on a shaded perch. Fortunately, their drawn-out, knocking call is very distinctive. Yellow-billed Cuckoos are fairly common in the East but have become rare in the West in the last half-century. This Linen Era (1930-45) postcard is in good condition. N.W.F. Washington, D.C. ©1942.
