During the 1880s, a group of Armenian youth from the Caucasus came to the city of Calvin to pursue higher education at the local university. They were consumed by revolutionary ideas and ideals, being dissatisfied with the conditions under which both Western Armenians and Eastern Armenians lived under Tsarist or Ottoman tyranny. The Armenians had to liber- ate themselves from foreign oppression and regain for them- selves the right to a dignified life in an independent state. During this period, Geneva had become one of the bastions of Marxist-socialist intelligentsia, and among the circles of students at its university were such figures as Mikhail Bakunin, Alexander Herzen, Georgi Plekhanov, Vera Zasulich, Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin, Pavel Axelrod, Lenin (somewhat later) and others. The Armenian students at the university established connections with the revolutionaries were inspired by them and blended their progressive teachings with their own ideas. Nevertheless, the main priority and focus of the Armenian revolutionary students was always the Armenian Question, particularly the liberation of the Armenians from the Ottoman yoke, the creation of an independent Armenian homeland, and the establishment of just societal structures among the Armenian population. To this end, in August 1887, they founded the first Armenian revolutionary organization, and a mere three months later they issued the Armenian-language organ, Hnchak which later gave the new entity its name: The Hnchakian Party. During the summer of 1995, I visited the area surrounding the University of Geneva for the first time, notably the Café Landolt at the corner of Rue De-Candolle and Rue du Conseil-Général. This café still maintained its fame as a favourite gathering-place of the revolutionary students and activists. The entire atmosphere of the place; the tables and tightly packed benches, the cloud of tobacco smoke, the aroma of beer, wine, food and freshly brewed coffee, and the enthusiastic bustle of young students had a unique charm and made a lasting impression on me: this magical moment was the genesis of this volume. It was the first socialist party to operate in the Ottoman Empire and in Iran, then known as Persia.[3] Among its founders were Avetis Nazarbekian, Mariam Vardanian, Gevorg Gharadjian, Ruben Khan-Azat, Christopher Ohanian, Gabriel Kafian and Manuel Manuelian.
