Archie's Weird Mysteries is a limited run comic book series based on the Archie Comics brand, specifically created as a tie-in for the TV series of the same name, which ran from 19992000. It revolves around a similar premise, in which various B-movie horror-esque occurrences plague Riverdale, often disrupting the social lives of Archie Andrews and his friend group. After an initial pitch in 1999, the series was picked up and ran from February 2000 June 2004, beginning towards the end of the show's run and ending nearly two years after the release of the TV movie, The Archies in JugMan (2002). The extended run of the comic series is likely due to the crew holding out hope that another season of the show was on its wayor possibly another movie, given the first one's cliffhanger endingalthough neither came to be despite the show never being officially canceled. Likewise, it can be assumed that the later rebranding of the series is a response to the lack of more animated tie-ins. Archie's Weird Mysteries "Based on the all-new animated series from DIC! 30 years after The Archie Show made television history as the highest-rated Saturday morning animated series of its time, Archie and his friends are back in animated form! Archie's Weird Mysteries combines the classic high school hi-jinx and dating dilemmas Archie fans have grown to love, with creepy mysteries that are equal parts X-Files and Scooby Doo! Of course, we had to spin off a new comic series to go along with the cartoon!" Issues NOTE: Stories with bolded links are directly connected to (or are similar to) episodes of the television series. Archie's Weird Mysteries Although set in the same continuity, the comic books have next to no explicit connections to the TV series itself, although some of the stories are either adaptations of certain episodes, or directly tie into said episodes (usually with a text box indicating this). Some stories might even share similarities with certain episodes, although these are likely coincidental. A few of the stories were also written based on ideas submitted via a "Make Your Own Mystery!" contest. In traditional Archie Comics fashion, most issues contain at least two smaller stories, but certain ones only contain one full-length adventure. The series was released on a monthly basis, before becoming mostly bi-monthly starting with Issue #10, save for Issues #15 and #22 releasing in September of their respective years. Differences from the TV series Certain legacy Archie Comics characters who were absent in the show, such as Cheryl Blossom, Svenson, and most of the parents, make appearances in the comics. The comic series also includes crossovers with other Archie Comics properties and characters, with one prominent example being Sabrina Spellman in Case of the Haunted Comic Shop! The main characters change their clothes far more often, like in most incarnations. In fact, their default outfits from the show almost never appear. Rather than trying to replicate the show's art direction, the art style of the comic series uses a more sketchy look, reminiscent of early Archie Comics. Unlike the TV show, the stories do not typically end with Archie writing the articles on his weird mysteries. Instead, he or another character might break the Fourth wall on the cover of certain issues. Characters that are introduced specifically for certain stories are not confined to those stories, unlike most of the ones introduced in the show. Oftentimes, there will be a reoccurring villain or side-character. Pop culture references in the comics are almost always a lot more subtle, often using pun-based titles and names, whereas the TV show makes a notable amount of blatant references to real-life movies and people. Most of the stories within the comics had greater input from Archie Comics veterans, unlike the TV show, which merely had the then-chairman of Archie Comics as an executive producer. Most notably, the comics were largely written by Paul Castiglia, who is best known for his work on the Archie Americana series of reprints, as well as doing some story planning for 1994's Love Showdown arc and acting as the company historian. Trivia It is possible, though unconfirmed, that the comic series could be a spin-off or alternate timeline to Archie's Weird Mysteries, completely separate from the show, as it depicts the gang meeting Dr. Beaumont in a much different scenario than they did there. Further proof lies in Archie's narration from the Archie and the Riverdale Vampires VHS, where he states that the supernatural occurrences began with the first episode, seemingly rendering the Quarkinator incident non-canon. This theory is partially shot down by The Scarlet Chronicles and The Return of Scarlet, which are both blatant callbacks to the show and even point readers towards it.
