Description: Color sketch by artist Archie Boyd of a scene of Orleans Street, New Orleans, Louisiana. Sketch is mounted on an original roofing slate tile from an old building c.1700's. Measures approximately 6x8" and has a leather tie for hanging. Previously displayed and in excellent condition. I also have several other similar, larger pieces available for sale, see my other items. The back reads: Roofing slates mined in Pennsylvania and transported down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers raft, became the roofing material after the disastrous fire of 1795. Each one was individually hand shaped. This one came from one of the old buildings in the Vieux Carre area and dates back to the late 1700's and early 1800's. Orleans Street New OrleansOne of the earliest streets to be laid out in the design of the fledgling community. Its most historic building, 269 years old, is the Bourbon Orleans at 717. A man named John Davis built the Orleans Ballroom where the famous Quadroon balls were held. The clock in the old cathedral tolled the hour for the music to start.
