Description: Color sketch by artist Archie Boyd of a scene of the famed NACHEZ Steam Paddle Boat. Sketch is mounted on an original roofing slate tile from an old building c.1700's. Measures approximately 9x11" and has a leather tie for hanging. Previously displayed and in excellent condition. I also have several other similar pieces available for sale, see my other items. The back reads: Roofing slates mined in Pennsylvania and transported down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers on rafts became the roofing material after the disastrous fire of 1795. Each one was individually hand shaped. This one came from one of the old buildings in the Vieux Carre, New Orleans area and dates back to the 1800's. NATCHEZ The Sternwheeler Steamboat Natchez IX is the newest and largest (1600 passengers) all steel sternwheeler steamer excursion boat built in the United States in this century. It travels along the mighty Mississippi where the Spanish, the French, the pirates, and the Cajuns have, in their turn, held sway over the 250 years of eventful history. The Natchez, a proud name of a similar proud vessel which plied these same waters over 100 years ago and raced with the Robert E. Lee "wheeler" to St. Louis in 1870.
