Notes: Corcyra (Korkya) was a major ancient Greek city on the island of the same name (modern Corfu) in the Ionian Sea, adjacent to Epirus along north west coast of Greece which was a wealthy and enterprising maritime state owing to its strategic location on the sailing route from mainland Greece to Italy. The island was first settled by Eretrians and then as a colony of the Corinthians. Thucydides writes that Korkyra was one of the three great naval powers in fifth century BC Greece, along with Athens and Corinth. About 585 BC, with the death of Periander of Corinth, Corcyra became independent of its mother city. In the Hellenistic Period Korkyra changed hands several times and in 303 BC, after the occupation of Corinth by Philip,338 BC, Corcyra, like many other Corinthian colonies, began to strike staters similar to those of Corinth, but with the inscr. ΚΟΡ, ΚΟΡΚΥΡΑΙΩΝ, or just 'Κ'. In B.C. 229 Corcyra surrendered to the Romans, under whose protection it was allowed to retain its autonomy. Under Julius Caesar to Hadrian ( 48 BC - 138 AD) the city of Corcyra continued to strike autonomous bronze coins on which the deities ΖΕΥC ΚΑCΙΟC and ΑΓΡΕΥC, with their names in full, and Ares, are frequently represented. The first is usually in the attitude of Zeus seated on a throne. Agreus is a standing bearded figure, clad in a long chiton, and holding a cornucopiae. The worship of this pastoral god was related to that of Aristaeos. From 138-222 AD, under Antoninus Pius to Geta the Imperial coins of the period have the Emperor’s head with reverse types of Zeus Kasios, Agreus, Ares, Galley under sail, Pegasos, Dionysos on panther, etc. Some Excerpts From Head, Hist.
