Description: ANTIQUE VELLUM BOX, CHEST, TRUNK etc Dated around 1880 Wooden case, covered in vellum. Chinese character mark to the front, which is only partially visible. Original & authentic, not a reproduction. 42cm wide, 28cm deep, 15cm high Original metal handles and catch. Cloth lined. Letter 'V' to the top, which is now faint. Used condition, with some wear, marks, discolouration and vellum splits etc. Unrestored condition. The term vellum from the French veau refers to a parchment made from calf skin. The manufacture of parchment is quite involved. After the skin is removed from the animal and any hair or flesh is cleaned away, it is stretched on a wooden frame.
