Konpeito is a type of Japanese sugar candy. It takes the form of a small sphere with a bumpy surface, and comes in a variety of colors and flavors. Jar stands just over 3" tall, to top of lid finial. Displays beautifully, with very minor glaze flakes to edge of lid, as shown in bottom photo. No other chips, nicks, cracks, hairlines, scratches, stains, or repairs. Guaranteed to be antique, and not a modern reproduction! Around the 1840s Ashley A. Vantine started a provision and supply business in San Francisco. He continued in California until 1869, when he came to New-York and established himself in the Oriental goods business, opening his first shop for oriental wares in New York in 1869 on Broadway. Mr. Vantine traveled a great deal, particularly to China and Japan, crossing the Pacific sixteen times and made six visits to Turkey and Southern Russia. (thus the mark on the bottom of this piece.) The company started a mail order business and came to have their own factories in Yokohama and Nagoya, Japan.
