ANTIQUE STEWART BROTHERS R LINEMAN TELEPHONE TESTER BOX WITH HEADSET

Description: ANTIQUE STEWART BROTHERS MODEL 651 R LINEMAN TELEPHONE TESTER BOX For your consideration today is this vintage mid to late 1930's Stewart Brothers field or lineman's telephone box that possibly could be from World War II, and includes an ear receiver piece. Please do check out the pictures very closely as well! This is a very heavy outfit that is marked on the side with Stewart Bros. Inc. of Chicago 44, Illinois, the head piece is unmarked with the battery clamps being marked Mueller Electric Co. The item consists of an oak box that has the magneto inside, the crank on the outside, a jack inlet for the ear piece, the headset for the ear including the jack, t is a button on the top for probably receiving, then two wires that have clips on each end for what appears to be for attaching to a battery. It has a very heavy leather cover and strap, as well as buckles on the front. Again, I am not sure if this is a field telephone from around World War II or if it is a lineman's phone for testing equipment. Any help is appreciated! Magneto functions. The package weighs in at approximately 10 lbs. The crank turns the magneto well with some good resistance, the crank is solid and has not lost its finish, and still works fine. The box is made of oak, it has normal wear and tear as well as loss of original varnish and finish, but the wood remains very strong, with only a one stress crack on the bottom, but nothing bad at all. This would be a very neat piece refinished as the grain is quite nice. The box is supported with brass straps that cover each corner, so t are 8 of them, and all are in place well. The top of the box has the inlet for the headset, the plastic button for receiving or transmitting, we assume, then another spot that appears to be for power that has a glass over it. There are two battery clamps attached to 36" cords, they have some wear but still intact, the head set is not marked that I can see and is part Bakelite and metal in material, it has some general wear but remains solid, and has a wire clip for the head that remains fine, with a cord that is marked 15A that is over 5 feet long, and in pretty good shape yet. The buckles straps are still on the front but latch hardware is broken, the very heavy leather top remains in solid condition with no tears or holes but inside leather holder for plug has lost its stitching, it does have quite a bit of surface wear and some stains, but think it might clean up a lot better with a good leather cleaner. The buckle attachments on box are both damaged, the inside of the flap has a spot w the headset can be stored, it is a very heavy duty leather strap that is very strong yet, but also has a lot of wear and tear to the surface, but still pliable. That also might clean up better. The name plate remains good overall but has some scratches on it and missing one tack. Very neat unit that we think is getting towards 90 years old! This is a pretty solid outfit that has some very good parts, and would be a fine addition to any vintage telephone collection!Oops! Crank tip not shown but i have it and in good condition, just fell off in my car!
