Description: An incredible antique oil painting of colorful birds in gilt frame from the 19th Century. This is one of two folk art paintings we will be offering in our shop unquestionably the same artist. Prior owner noted "Spanish 1850s" which I would say I agree with. The painting shown comes in an early gilt wood frame which measures 17" X 13 1/4" with a width of 1 3/4". The color is bright but as you would expect, there is wear in areas from age. The stretcher is not nailed into the frame (as we acquired it). The oil painting measures approximately 14" X 11" and has been relined onto a newer canvas at some point in time. This relining process was common in the 19th Century. We did not clean or attempt the clean the painting. It is in its original as found condition. The subject matter is beautiful with several colorful birds including a bird of paradise, what appears to be a pheasant or some other type of large bird toward the bottom. There is also a nest of blue eggs. We used a black light and still could not find a signature which we were not surprised as some our best folk-art pieces have been unsigned works. We note split of the canvas in the upper right corner and have photographed for you to see. You can clearly see the age of the original canvas in our photos. The frames are old, but I strong believe the oil paintings are even earlier than the frames. Please see our listing for the accompanying bird painting which we will be adding today. They are incredible as a pair.
