Mappin & Webb's traces its origins to Jonathon Mappin who founded a small silver workshop in Sheffield in 1775, which is a leading centre of the English Silver Trade to this day. One of Jonathan Mappin's great grandsons, John Mappin, started his own business in London, Mappin & Company, in 1860, which became Mappin, Webb & Co. in 1862 after John Mappin was joined by his brother-in-law George Webb. The first Mappin & Webb store opened in 1860 in Oxford Street London. As a natural progression from silverware, Mappin & Webb began designing jewellery. Mappin, Webb & Co. acquired Mappin Brothers in 1903.It has held Royal Warrants to British monarchs since 1897. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to commission the company. The company's master craftsman Mark Appleby is the current Crown Jeweller. The company has had many important customers including Queen Marie Antoinette of France, The Empress of Russian and Princess Grace of Monaco and the British royal family. The company has authentic provenance- Elizabeth Galton the Company director once explained that its success as a brand lies in part in its ability to trace its origins back to the 18th century in Sheffield. Its heritage flows through every aspect and detail of the brand. But that is only part of the story. To create lasting success, a brand has continued to create contemporary products that appeal to successive generations, something that Mappin & Webb has always done extremely well. Over the years the brand has become synonymous with the finest contemporary designs, including engagement rings, bridal pieces and watches. Mappin & Webb merged with Elkington and Walker & Hall in 1963, the merged company being named British Silverware Ltd. In 1973 Mappin & Webb was bought by Sears Holdings The company was eventually bought by Baugur, which became insolvent in 2010. After a brief spell in the Asprey Garrard group, the company now forms part of the retail group Aurum Holdings. It continues to produce classic silverware and fine jewellery collections, and is a retailer of luxury timepieces in its boutiques and on its own website you can see many superb pieces.
