The bag shows it’s age but it and the clubs are in great condition for their age, Here is some information on them. History of J & W Cragie This club has a Scored Line face pattern, with Comet Brand of J.&W. Craigie Montrose in an oval, stamped hand forged, Accurate with an arrow pointing to the toe of the club and putter. Research tells us that J.&W. Craigie – Two timber merchants who branched out into club making in Montrose, combining this activity with work as joiners and plumbers. With this background, not surprisingly the quality of wood used is one of their distinguishing features, well-seasoned beech and the reintroduction of ash in the 1890s. They are probably not the first club making firm one would associate with the export trade but in 1902 it was reported they had received an order for three gross of clubs from India. They used two cleek marks: a rifle and a shooting star (from which came the Comet Brand). The business continued into the 1930s but an advertisement in 1936 announced the sale of all machinery and plant in the Lower Balmain Street premises. John (1854-1928) and William (1859-1925) ran a small firm which produced a limited quantity of well made clubs which bore the “Rifle” symbol from 1895-1925. This Club is in good playable condition. Background of H. a. Murton This putter is stamped with the company name H.a. Murton Newcastle On Tyne. Murton on Tyne is a small village in England. I have attempted to locate information on the maker but have come up short. Believe that Murton was a brass fly fishing reel maker that aparently made putters at one time.
