Description: This charming antique cross-stitch sampler--an unsigned schoolgirl's 'specimen of achievement'--is dated 1761 and depicts the alphabet in capital letters, stylized flowers and stitch chains. It is on plain cotton or linen cloth, measuring 8 1/2"x 16" with colorful threads. The sampler shows age-appropriate discoloration for an unconserved fabric piece, and has no holes or tears. It is mounted in a wooden frame with glass front measuring 12 1/2"x22". It is not known whether the frame's backing is acid-free.
