Description: Antique Alfred Meakin "The Calcara" Dinnerware. Pattern Description: Bright Pink Roses On Black, Tan Circle and Green Border. Smooth Rims with Gold Metallic Trim. The circular 'ALFRED MEAKIN - ENGLAND' surrounding a crown Maker's Mark dates from circa 1907 to 1913. "The Calcara' pattern is printed in red below the green mark; it does not 'Ltd' in the mark. Alfred Meakin Ltd was set up in 1875 and operated from the Royal Albert, Victoria and Highgate Potteries in Tunstall. Alfred Meakin was the brother of James and George Meakin who ran a large pottery company in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Alfred Meakin died in 1904 and was succeeded by his son Alfred James who died only four years later. From c. 1913 renamed "Alfred Meakin (Tunstall) Ltd." Alfred John's uncle Robert Johnson bought the company for his son Stuart Johnson and it stayed in the Johnson family's hands until 1976 when it was acquired by Myott, Son & Co. Ltd. (Hampson refers to Interpace Corporation of Parsippany, New Jersey, owning both Myott (since 1969) and Alfred Meakin. Interpace were, at the time, the largest tableware manufacturer in the USA) 1976 –1991 Myott-Meakin 1989 acquired by Melton Modes (Nottingham) to become Myott-Meakin (Staffordshire) Ltd. 1991 management bought out Melton Modes. June 1991 acquired by Churchill Group. Condition: These century old pieces generally show their age. All pieces show wear to the gold trim and have at least light shelf wear and utensil marks. Many pieces have light to heavy crazing; some have heavy crazing with staining. Any piece with major condition issues, including heavy crazing with staining, has been listed separately with photos and description. Items with just heavy crazing (with no staining) are not itemized. All items are antique and priced according to their condition and sold as is unless I have neglected to mention a major flaw.
