Description: Up for bid is an antique portable microscope in its original wooden box, as found. The box is 6 5/8 inches long by 2 3/4 inches wide and 2 ¼ inches tall. It is made of mahogany, with brass hinges and two hook and pin clasps. It has a fitted interior, and is stamped twice inside the lid “Patented apr 3d 1871 / A BARROWMAN / Book Window Shade / and STAIR BUILDER, / Hyde Park Luz. Co. Pa.”. I have not been able to find any information on Barrowman; the patent may refer to the box design. The microscope itself is about 6 inches long, made of brass, with a hard black inset base, a pivoting mirror, and a tube with eyepiece that slides up and down by hand to focus. The eyepiece unscrews, as does the 3 power lens. There are places in the box for an additional lens and other accessories, now missing. The microscope is not marked at all. Condition on the piece is fairly good. It has been used well, with scratches, wear and minor dings, and accessories are missing as noted. One of the internal holding fittings in the box is broken off as well. Otherwise the box is in decent shape. Still a fine antique instrument!
